BCL leader killed in Jhalokati post-election violence

A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader has been killed in post union parishad election violence at Kathalia upazila in Jhalakati district.

Seven others were also injured during the attack that happened at Beel Chonauta village under Amua Union on Tuesday evening.
Deceased Md Ariful Islam, 20, was the organising secretary of Ward No 7. He was the son of Lal Mia.

The family alleged that Ariful was hacked to death.

Quoting the inhabitants of the area, police said Ariful was the supporter of Ziaul Faruq who contested for the post of UP member during the union parishad election held on June 21.

Ariful and some of his family members were hacked during an attack by the followers of another candidate Mojibor Sikder at an office near the village on Tuesday evening.

The clash broke out between the two groups that left at least seven injured.

Critically injured BCL leader was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead at 10:30pm on Tuesday.

Kathalia Police Station OC Pulok Chandra Roy said Mojibor Rahman and his supporters went into hiding after the incident.
