A former leader Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal, the student wing of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was allegedly shot in the leg by the police after picking him up from in Chattogram city’s Bayezid area early Thursday.

The injured is Md Saiful Islam, 34, a former assistant general secretary of Chattogram city unit of JCD, and a resident of Burma Colony at Bayezid area.
The police, however, claimed that Saiful received bullet in the leg during a ‘gunfight’ in the port city early Thursday while three cops were also injured.

Chattogram city unit JCD convener Md Saiful Islam said victim Saiful was picked up by Bayezid police from Bayezid area and shot in the leg at Bayezid Link Road area.

Saiful's brother Md Shahin said that a police source named Akash called Saiful at about 9.48pm on Wednesday and asked him to meet with him.

"When he went to meet with Akash at Oxygen area, police picked up him from there," he alleged.

Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bayezid Bostami police station, claimed that Saiful and his gang members opened fire targeting police at Bayezid Link Road area at about 1:40am. Police also opened fire in retaliation and later they arrested Saiful from the spot, he said and claimed that they seized one firearm and six rounds of cartridges from the spot.

Saiful received bullet injuries and three cops were injured during the 'gunfight', the OC claimed.

He said arrested Saiful, accused in 18 cases, was undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH)

Mokhlesur Rahman, deputy commissioner (North) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), however, said there was no pending warrant of arrest against Saiful Islam now.

He said two cases were filed against Saiful Islam on Thursday – one for assaulting the police and the other for possessing firearm and bullets.
