70 await for a ICU bed at Rajshahi Medical
At least 70 patients are waiting to get a bed out of 20 beds in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. If a patient who is already in the ICU dies or improves a little, the bed is emptied which paves the way for another patient to secure a bed.
It was revealed on Thursday morning that the number of patients enrolled in the ICU was close to 100. That number is now 70. If any of the patients in the ICU cure a little, he is being taken out and shifted to the General Ward or when someone dies, the bed of the patient becomes empty. Then the waiting patient is being called to the ICU by phone according to the list.
The hospital authority is able to take 8 to 10 patients in ICU every day. As per the accommodation of the hospital, patient number 60 of the serial has to wait several days to get a bed in ICU.
There were 20 patients in the ICU of the hospital this morning. Of these, 12 were coronavirus positive while the rest were with coronavirus symptoms.
The hospital initially had 10 coronavirus dedicated ICU beds. Although these 10 beds are not enough, it has been increased to 20. The last two beds were extended on Monday.
However, RMCH Director Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani said the hospital does not have the infrastructure to increase the number of ICU beds.
“At the moment, we don’t have the structural capacity to expand our ICU beds. I did everything what I could. Now there are 20 ICU beds,” he said at a regular briefing on coronavirus situation.
Shamim Yazdani said, “As the number of patients increases, so does the capacity. As a result, they are struggling to get treatment. Other common ailments are being hampered by the release of new wards for coronavirus patients.”
