Strict lockdown in Rajshahi begins to check COVID transmission


An all-out lockdown began in Rajshahi city on Friday afternoon to check the upward transmission of deadly coronavirus.

Law enforcers took position at different points in the city.
People who remained outside were asked to return home as quickly as possible through miking at different intersections before 5:00pm on Friday. Stricter enforcement began after 5:00pm. All the roads leading to the city were closed. As a result, city-bound passengers from different upazilas faced untold sufferings. They had to enter the city through alternative routes subsequently.

The administration also adopted special preparations centering the strict lockdown. Dozens of police team were seen patrolling at different intersections in the city. They were also asking people to stay inside their houses through miking.

Police took position at a number of intersections including Katakhali Sugar Mills, Naodapara Amchattar and Kashiadanga. They returned all the city-bound motor vehicles from upazilas. Passengers who tried to enter the city on board CNGs and autorickshaws suffered a lot. Many of them could not enter the city requesting police repeatedly.

The administration imposed stricter restrictions on Saheb Bazar Zero Point and entry points of the city.

Talking to journalists at about 5:00pm at Saheb Bazar Zero Point area, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) commissioner Abul Kalam Siddique said, "Decision has been taken to enforce a seven-day lockdown in Rajshahi. Lockdown means lockdown. We want it will be a complete lockdown."

It may be mentioned that Rajshahi's divisional commissioner Dr Humayun Kabir announced a stricter lockdown in Rajshahi city at 10:00pm on Thursday. The lockdown will remain effective until June 17 midnight.
