Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) has developed a genetically improved Rohu variety, called "Subarna Ruhi" after a decade of effort and perseverance.
The new variety has been named "Subarna Ruhi" as it has been developed at the beginning of Golden Jubilee of the Independence.
Fisheries and Livestok Secretary Raunak Mahmud formally handed over the brood of "Subarna Ruhi" to the Department of Fisheries and several hatchery owners on Thursday morning.
The BFRI scientists have developed this new variety of the fourth generation of Ruhi fish through genetic research which has up to 20.12% faster growth potential than that of the original variety. It looks light red in colour and tasty to consume.
Sources at the BFRI said the new variety will get importance to the fish farmers, hatchery owners and new entrepreneurs for naming it as 'Subarna Ruhi'. They also believe the variety will quickly spread at the grassroots level very soon. As a result, it will contribute significantly to the fish production in the country.
With the BFRI Director General Dr Yahya Mahmud in the chair, the virtual function was also attended by Director General of the Department of Fisheries Kazi Shams Afroze.
Describing the new variety of 'Subarna Ruhi' as a special gift of the Golden Jubilee of the Independence, the BFRI Director General Dr Yahya Mahmud said the fast growing 'Subarna Ruhi' will bring smile to the faces of farmers and substantially contribute to the fish production in the country.
