BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that half of the climate fund provided by donors to Bangladesh has been looted.

He made the remarks while speaking at a roundtable on "Global Disaster: Future Plan and What We Need To Do" organised at Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Saturday on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Fakhrul said the government is giving priority to mega projects in the national budget for 2021-22 fiscal rather than the health sector as the mega projects create scope of 'mega corruption'.
"Why this mega project in this time when saving people’s lives is more important? We are requesting the government to provide cash incentives to pandemic hit people. But the government pays no heed to it," Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader also alleged that the main objective of all the activities of the government is to indulge in corruption and looting.

"There is a World Bank fund on climate change. They [government] got Tk 700 crore in past few years. Half of the money they gave back to the Bank and they had embezzled the rest half," he said.

The BNP Secretary General said injustice has been done to environment in Bangladesh by cutting down trees.

"But, it was late President Ziaur Rahman who took various initiatives including tree plantation and canal digging to save the environment. Roadside trees were even planted during the rule of BNP government," he said.

The discussion was also participated by BNP vice-chairman Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Babu Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and leaders of the BNP's Environment Committee.
