'Strict lockdown' is likely to remain in place for more one week after Eid-ul-Fitr in the wake of the risk of spreading the dangerous Indian coronavirus variant in the country.
However, the government's policymakers have reached a consensus that the lockdown would continue to remain in force after Eid though a time-limit is unlikely to be decided.
State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain on Tuesday told reporters that the government had a plan to extend the lockdown for one more week because the Indian variant was detected in the country. "It may put the entire country on risk. The government will inform people about its decision on May 16 to avert the spread of transmission," he said.
He said: "We all wear masks. We will be safe if we wear masks, otherwise, we will face serious risks."
Sources said though the coronavirus transmission rate and deaths from Covid-19 is now showing downward trend, the government is now deeply worried about the Indian variant. Because of it, the government is likely to entend the ongoing lockdown for one week more.
