Ex-SP Babul Akhter arrested in wife Mitu murder case

Former police superintendent Babul Akter has been arrested in his wife sensational Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case in Chattogram.

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested him on Tuesday evening.
Earlier, he was questioned at PBI's Chattogram City office at Mansurabad. Senior officials of the PBI including investigation officer of the case, inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma questioned him.

However, the PBI has been maintaining strict secrecy in this regard.

PIB chief DIG Banaj Kumar Mazumder said, "He (Babul Akhter) went PBI's Chattogram city officer earlier. He is being questioned as he is a defendant in the case. There is a High Court ruling. We're unable to say anything more."

However, it is learnt that Former police super Babul Akter went to the PBI's Chattogram office at the directive of the PBI.

Contacted, PBI inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma said, "He is a defendant in the case. Since we have been investigating the case, he came here to know the progress of investigation."

Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was hacked and shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants at Nizam Road near the GEC are adjacent to their house in Chattogram city on June 5, 2016 when she went there to board her son to a school bus.

Later, husband Babul Akhter filed a murder case against three unidentified persons.

Following Mitu's murder, it was anticipated that militants might have involved with the murder because her husband was one of the front-ranking police officials who were involved in anti-militant operations. But, later Babul Akhter and Mitu's extramarital affairs came to light.

Police also arrested five suspects – Anwar, Motaleb Mia Wasim, Shahjahan Mia, Saiful Islam Saku, and alleged firearms supplier Ehteshamul Huque Bhola.

Anwar and Wasim told a Chittagong court that Babul's informer Kamrul Islam Musa had planned the murder and that they took part in it.

Police seized two small arms used in Mitu's murder from Ehteshamul and recovered her SIM card from a rickshaw puller in Bhola.

Two other suspects – Nurul Islam Rashed and Noor Nabi – were killed in an alleged gunfight with police on July 5 last year in Rangunia.

CMP has put a Tk 5 lakh bounty on absconding Musa and issued red alert against him and Kalu. Musa’s wife Panna Akhter claimed plainclothesmen had picked up her husband and brother-in-law Saku on June 22 last year but police rejected the claim.
