Bangladesh is going to sign agreements with Russia and China soon to import Covid vaccine, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Friday.

"We're exchanging letters with Russian and Chinese authorities concerned. We're hopeful of receiving vaccine shortly," he said while speaking at a food items distribution programme at Shuvra Centre in Garpara area under Manikganj Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.

The food items were distributed among 2,000 destitute families who have been affected by coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Minister said the government has imposed lockdown in the country. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has rattled the entire world. Many people have been facing great sufferings due to the lockdown, while many of them have lost their income turning jobless. It is the responsibility of all to stand beside them. The government has also provided assistance to thousands of affected people.

He said the government is working tirelessly to ensure vaccinating all people of the country.

"We're giving highest priority to bring Covid vaccine. Some vaccines are still in stock in the country. Bangladesh signed agreement to import 3 crore doses of vaccine from Serum Institute of India. But they provided only 70 lakh vaccine doses, while 30 lakh doses were given as gifts. Since then Bangladesh has not received any vaccine from India. As a result, the first dose of vaccination has been suspended," he said.

With Manikganj deputy commissioner SM Ferdous in the chair, the food distribution programme was also addressed by Police Super Rifat Rahman, District Council chairman Golam Mohiuddin, District Awami League general secretary Abdus Salam, District Awami League vice-president Abdul Mazid, Manikganj Pourasava mayor Ramzan Ali and Sadar Upazila Awami League general secretary Afsar Uddin Sarker, among others.
