Gazipur councillor, AL leaders among 25 sued for extortion

An extortion case has been filed in Gazipur against 25 persons including a councillor of Gazipur City Corporation and the ward Awami League president and general secretary.
Md Imtiaz, manager of a factory, filed the case with Kashimpur Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) on Wednesday evening.
GMP deputy commissioner Zakir Hasan confirmed media about the matter on Thursday.
He said ward 2 councillor Montaj Uddin Mandal, ward 2 AL president Abdul Halim and general secretary Md Shahidullah, AL leaders Abdul Gani and Abul Quashem are among 25 made accused in the case filed for demanding Tk 5 lakh as toll.
According to the case statement, the accused have been demanding toll to the factory's MD M Farooque Ahmed.
"Despite the bid to settle the issue locally, the councillor and his men have been threatening. Recently, they demanded Tk 5 lakh. As, the factory authorities denied meeting the demand, they beat up officials and workers of the factory. Workers put up barricade on the Dhaka EPZ road on May 3 and 4 protesting the assault," said the case.
The plaintiff said the case has been lodged for the safety of factory and its workers.
DC Zakir Hasan said one of the accused has been arrested while drives are on to nab the rest ones.
Meanwhile, councillor Montaj Uddin Mandal denied the allegation of extortion and claimed that the case was filed to demean them socially.
