Disputes and clashes have occurred at a special general meeting convened by the Supreme Court Bar Association over the vacant post of the president.
Awami League and BNP-backed lawyers have blamed each other for the incident held at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium on Tuesday.
According to sources Awami League and BNP-backed lawyers started arguing over who will preside over the general meeting at the beginning of the scheduled meeting. At one stage of the meeting, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association, said, “I will conduct the meeting as per the rules.” But it was opposed by Advocate Muhammad Shafiq Ullah, vice president of the current committee of Awami League-backed lawyers. He stood on the dais of the auditorium and announced that he would preside over the meeting.
At one stage of the argument between the two, Shafiq Ullah declared attorney general AM Amin Uddin as the president of SCB. Awami League-backed lawyers supported the announcement while the BNP-backed lawyers opposed.
At that time, the lawyers got involved in the debate again about electing the president through ballot, not voice vote. There were also clashes. After that, when the electricity and microphone of the auditorium were disconnected, the lawyers came out.
Outside the auditorium, members of the Awami League-backed executive committee, led by vice president Shafiq Ullah, announced that the resolution have been passed and attorney general AM Amin Uddin has been nominated president.
However, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol said the meeting was postponed as the overall situation was no favorable to hold a general meeting.
