Madaripur speedboat-bulkhead collision death toll rises to 26

The death toll from Monday's bulkhead-speedboat collision in the Padma River in Madaripur rose to 26 with the recovery of one more body.
Of the deceased, five were identified and the bodies were handed over to the victims' families.
River police members are continuing rescue operation. Shibchar UNO Md Asaduzzaman, police, river police and army personnel are present on the spot.
Banglabazar Ferryghat's traffic police's inspector Ashiqur Rahman said a passenger carrying speedboat sailed from Munshiganj's Shimulia around 6:45am for Banglabazar ferryghat in Shibchar.
Suddenly, the speedboat sank in the river after being hit by the sand-laden bulkhead.
On information, fire service divers from Shibchar and Jajira fire stations rushed to the spot and recovered 24 bodies.
They also rescued six persons alive and whisked them off to local hospital where two persons died.
Meanwhile, local administration has formed a six-member committee to probe the accident.
Local Government Division deputy director Azharul Islam will lead the committee, said Madaripur DC Rahima Khatun.
Family of each dead victim will be given Tk 20,000 as compensation.
