Umama Begum Kanak, 40, a member of Awami League’s relief and social welfare sub-committee, was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband in Dhaka’s Pallabi area early Saturday.
The incident took place at about 12:30 am at their house in Mirpur DOHS.
Ruma, the elder sister of the deceased, said, "Kanak’s husband Omar Faruq had been in Japan for a long time. He was not doing anything after coming to the country. Both of them engaged in quarrel over this. As sequel of it, Faruq stabbed Kanak with a sharp weapon on Friday night, leaving her critically injured."
"On information, she was rescued from the house and admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) at night. She died early Saturday morning while undergoing treatment."
She added that Faruq was at home after Kanak was stabbed. He then confessed to everyone that he had stabbed his wife.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost inspector Bachchu Miah said the body was kept in the morgue for autopsy.
The incident was reported to Pallabi Police Station, he added.
Officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station Kazi Wazed Ali said he was staying at the hospital after receiving the news of the incident.
The OC further said that the husband of the deceased has been arrested and Kanak was involved in Awami League’s politics.
