DNCC councilor opens help desk for dwellers

Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, councilor for ward no-6 under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), has opened a help desk for providing services to the poor and slum people in the area.

While inaugurating the help desk on Saturday, the councilor heard the people’s problems and solved some immediately while asked the authorities to take necessary measures to resolve the rests as soon as possible.

Dwellers of the ward, which includes Pallabi, New Pallabi, Mirpur Section 6 and 7, Rupnagar, Duaripara, Sujatnagar, Harunabad and Eastern Housing (Phase-2), are now getting quick emergency services from the ward councilor’s office.

Some dwellers said receiving complaints from them through the help desk, councilor Bappi  is providing emergency services like spaying larvicide to control mosquito, cleaning drains and ensuring supply of clean water to its citizens.
While talking to this correspondent, Bappi said, “The idea of listening and solving people’s problems is new in the city area. Local people will now be able to place their problems to the help desk on a specific date. Hearing the problems, he will take measures to resolve those.”

He informed that the initiative was taken with the support of ‘Slum Based Citizen Action Network (SCAN)’ project being implemented in eight wards of Dhaka’s two city corporations.

Two non-government organizations--Solidarity International and Resource Integration Center (RIC)-- are jointly implementing the project in the areas with the financial and technical support of the European Union (EU).

Ward Councilor Taijul Islam Bappi said, “All people are equal to me. But, it was hard earlier to listen their problems together. Now, I can listen their problems after opening the desk. I am trying to solve their problems immediately after hearing their problems.”

Project Coordinator of RIC SMA Muyeed said, “All citizens can never get services properly. At the same time, the service providing agencies also never behave equally to the poor people. After opening the desk, the poor people are getting chance to complain directly and get services.”

Expressing hope to get proper services, a local dweller Sumi Hassan said that they have got a scope to place their problems after opening the help desk. “If the councilor hears the problems regularly and solves, there will be no problems any more in the area,” she hoped.
