A 100-bed coronavirus unit has been introduced at the Fever Clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the wake of rapid increase of Covid-19 transmission in the country.

Besides, he said initiatives have been taken to increase the number of high-flow nasal canulas, oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, RT PCR machines. "We expect that the patients will be admitted to the new corona unit opened at the Betar Bhaban and return home taking treatment from there," he said.
The BSMMU VC said more people are being infected with the new variant of Covid-19, known as the African variant. Some 81 per cent of patients are being infected by this variant. Though the death rate of the African variant of novel coronavirus is comparatively low, patients suffer various long-term complications being infected with this variant.
