Traders block Dhaka-Aricha highway demanding opening of markets

Traders in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway on Tuesday afternoon demanding to keep shops open during the lockdown.

They took position on the road at Aminbazar Bus Stand area for about one hour and staged demonstration to realise their demands.
The agitating traders said, "We are in great debt. We would not be able to repay the loan if we can not trade ahead of Eid".

"The government gave us a chance last year to do trade from 10:00am till 5:00pm. But this time, that did not happened too. For that reason, we were forced to take to the streets", they added.

Savar upazila assistant commissioner (land) Abdullah Al Mahfuz said the vehicular movement came to a halt as the shop traders staged demonstration blocking the highway around an hour.

However, the law enforcers removed them from the road after talking to them, he added.
