has said March 7 is an unforgettable day in the history of the Bengali nation's liberation war and independence.

On this day in 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered a time-honored fiery speech at the then Race Course Maidan.
He said the government has declared the day as a 'Historic 7th March Day', a landmark decision. "I remember with deep respect Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the greatest Bengali nation of all time, under whose unique general leadership the Bengali nation achieved an independent-sovereign Bangladesh in 1971."

President M Abdul Hamid came up with this message on the occasion of the historic March 7 Day. The nation will observe the historic March 7 on Sunday commemorating the landmark speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The President said that independence is the best achievement of Bengalis. However, it was not achieved in one day. In this long journey from the great language movement to the final victory of 1971, Bangabandhu's immense courage, boundless sacrifice, strong leadership, and right direction led the nation to the desired goal. Although the Awami League won an absolute majority in the 1970 general election, the Pakistani ruling class began to delay the transfer of power. The non-cooperation movement started on March 1 under the leadership of Bangabandhu.

Following this, on March 7, 1971, Bangabandhu delivered a historic speech to millions of people on the then ‘Race Course Maidan, now Suhrawardy Udyan with boundless courage, ignoring the bloody eyes of the then Pakistani ruling class. The speech set the tone for the Liberation War that would officially begin later that month on March 26.

In the 19-minute extempore speech before millions of people of former East Pakistan, Bangabandhu in unequivocal term said, "We spilled our blood…we are ready to shed more blood, the people of the country shall be freed, InshAllah!"

“Ebarer sangram amader muktir sangram, ebarer sangram swadhinatar sangram [The struggle this time is a struggle for emancipation, the struggle this time is a struggle for independence]," Bangabandhu proclaimed in a thunderous voice at a mammoth rally at the Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) that day.

"Turn every house into a fortress, resist the enemy with everything you have … Having mastered the lesson of sacrifice, we shall give more blood. God willing [Inshallah], we shall free the people of this land," Bangabandhu went on to proclaim.

The speech touched every Bangalee's heart across the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, and mobilized the whole nation, excepting a few pro-Pakistani elements, to prepare for the Liberation War.

Bangabandhu's March 7 speech has been selected as one of the most rousing and inspirational wartime speeches in the last 2,500 years. The dynamic speech had changed the course of the country's history.

The UNESCO included the speech in the Memory of the World International Register, a list of the world’s important documentary heritage maintained by the UN organization on October 30, 2017.
