By-election in Kazi Shahid Islam
Papul's Lakshmipur-2 constituency will be held on April 11.
The Election Commission (EC) announced by-election schedule for the vacant constituency on Wednesday. Voting in the by-election will be held through electronic voting machine (EVM).
Following a meeting at the EC Secretariat in Dhaka on Wednesday, EC secretary Humayun Kabir Khondker told journalists that the last date for submission of nomination papers in Lakshmipur-2 constituency is March 18, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised on March 19 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is March 24.
Kazi Shahid Islam Papul was an Independent MP from Lakshmipur-2 constituency. Papul's parliament membership was revoked in line with Article 66 of the Constitution as he was convicted for four years for criminal offence.
The Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat published a gazette notification on February 22 last declaring his parliamentary seat vacant.
A Kuwait court on January 28 sentenced Laxmipur-2 independent MP Papul to four years' jail in a case related to human trafficking, residency visa trading and money laundering.
He was also charged with torturing employees of his company, based on complaints from five Bangladeshi nationals subjected to trafficking.
Besides, he was fined 19 lakh Kuwaiti rials or Tk 53 crore.
Papul was arrested from his residence in Kuwait city on June 6 last year. After his conviction, he is currently in a Kuwait jail.
