BNP decides not to join Union Parishad elections |
![]() File Photo BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the party would not take part in Union Parishad elections in the future. This Election Commission is not qualified to conduct any election in a neutral, free and fair manner, he said. The BNP secretary general made the comment at a press conference at its chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Sunday. The decision was taken at a virtual meeting of the party’s standing committee held on Saturday. He said, “The naked interference of the government in recently held by-elections of various Upazila Parishads and municipal elections and the extreme failure of the Election Commission in holding fair elections were strongly condemned at the BNP Standing Committee meeting.” Fakhrul continued saying, “BNP has decided to participate in the local government elections in face of extreme adversity as the party believes in democracy. But the recent elections have proved that this Election Commission is not qualified to conduct any election in a neutral, free and fair manner. Their main task is to implement the agenda of this unelected government.” The BNP has always opposed party nominations in local government elections, said Fakhrul adding that in this dire situation, BNP has decided not to participate in the forthcoming Union Parishad elections. Mirza Fakhrul said, “Police had deliberately attacked Chhatra Dal’s rally at the National Press Club today. The government has curtailed freedom of expression through Digital Security Act. This law must be repealed immediately.” Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Begum Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud were present at the virtual meeting.
