The government has decided to resume classes at public universities on May 24 after closure of over a year.

Ahead of starting classes, student dormitories will be opened on May 17.

Education Minister Dipu Moni made the announcement at an emergency press conference on Monday.

The announcement came at a time when students have been staging demonstrations demanding the reopening of varsities.

In a latest development, students of Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagr University (JU) on Monday occupied  different dormitories defying the university authorities' instruction.

The minister also asked the students to leave halls who are still staying there.

She informed that after reopening halls, students, teachers and employees will be given Covid-19 vaccine.

The government closed all the educational institutions in March last year to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The closure was extended several times.
