Water transport workers have withdrawn their launch strike following a meeting with the authorities concerned.
Earlier, the workers had enforced the strike at about 2.00pm on Monday as two launch masters were sent to by Dhaka’s Marine Court following an accident.
Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation President Shah Alam at night said, “The strike was called off as the government assured us on getting bail of the two launch master. The workers have joined the work.”
After the denial of bail petitions of two launch masters, the workers stopped launch services across the country including Dhaka river port. At that time, the launches were removed from the pontoons of river terminals.
Meanwhile, passengers who came to Dhaka face immense sufferings at Sadarghat Terminal as they did not get any launch to reach their respective destinations.
The federation’s Barishal unit president Abul Hashem Master said Adventure-1 and Adveture-9 had a collision in the Meghna River last year due to dense fog, but, none was injured in the accident.
Certificates of four staff including the two masters-- Ruhul Amin and Almas-- had been confiscated and a case filed with the Marine Court at that time, he added.
“The court sent the due to the jail as they appeared before it today,” said Hashem.
