Members of a Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit have arrested a Syria-returnee militant from city's Mirpur area.
Police said Minhaj Hossain, 38, a member of Syria-based extremist outfit Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, was arrested from near Konabari bus stand in Darus Salam area on Saturday, reports a Bangla news portal.
He has allegedly been planning with Neo JMB members to carry out subversive activities in the country.
CTTC deputy commissioner Saiful Islam said Minhaj will be taken on remand for interrogation.
CTTC assistant commissioner Atiqul Islam said a case has been filed with Darus Salam Police Station under Anti Terrorism Act.
During initial interrogation, Minhaj said he alongwith his family had moved to Pakistan at early age and then to the US. He received higher studies in an US university.
Minhaj had visited Bangladesh in 2017. besides, he visited different countries including Turkey, Syria, Malaysia, Brunein and Papua New Guinea on various occasions.
