Smuggler held with 7.2kg gold placed on 5-day remand |
A Dhaka court on Saturday placed a gold smuggler on a five-day remand for bringing 7.2 kg of gold worth about Tk 5 crore illegally into the country.
The alleged smuggler is Sarwar Uddin Ahmed hailing from Chattogram. Metropolitan Magistrate Debobrata Biswas passed the order after Airport Police Sub Inspector Mehedi Hasan produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer, Airport police General Register Officer (GRO) Sub-Inspector Mahmud Hossain confirmed the matter to the Daily Observer on Saturday. Customs Intelligence officials detained Sarwar with 62 gold bars weighing 7.29kg at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital. He landed at the airport by a flight from Muscat on Friday morning. Tipped off, a team of Customs Intelligence recovered the gold after searching his bag and made the arrest. Later, the arrested was handed over to police and a case was filed with Airport Police Station on Friday night. |
