Biden suspends new oil and gas leases for 60 days

The Biden administration has suspended new oil and gas leases and drilling by the U.S. government as part of a review of the Department of Interior.

President Joe Biden's campaign as part of a plan to tackle climate change follows a promise to stop new drilling and end publicly owned fuel storage leases.

The suspension came into effect with an order signed by Acting Home Secretary Scott de la Vega on Wednesday. This has led to a rapid response from the oil industry.

The order also barred the planning of new mines, the approval of land sales or exchanges, and the hiring of senior-level staff in the agency.
