Death toll in Indonesia's landslides rises to 40, rescue operation closed

Two more bodies were evacuated in the landslides of Cihanjuang village, Sumedang district, West Java province of Indonesia, bringing the total death toll to 40, according to the Search and Rescue (SAR) Office in West Java's city of Bandung on Tuesday.

The two bodies were boys and girls who were found on Monday night, the office's head Deden Ridwansah said.

With this evacuation, all the victims have been recovered and the SAR operation in the Cihanjuang landslides was closed.

The SAR team recorded 65 victims, including 25 injured.

The landslides damaged dozens of houses, and displaced 1,119 people.
The first landslide occurred on at 4:00 p.m. local time on Jan. 9 due to high rainfalls and unstable soil conditions.

Meanwhile, a subsequent landslide occurred on the same day at 7:30 p.m. local time, when the SAR team was evacuating the victims.

Sumedang is a district vulnerable to landslides in the medium to high category. It has 26 sub-districts covering 60,872 hectares.
