Writ seeks HC directives to bar disclosing rape victim's identity

Writ seeks HC directives to bar disclosing rape victim's identity

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directives on imposing bar on disclosing the identities and photographs of dead or alive rape victims in the media.

Barrister Mahfuzur Rahman Milon filed the writ on Tuesday on behalf of Justice Watch Foundation.

In the petition, he also urged the HC to take action against those involved in publishing photographs of the victims.

The secretaries of Law and Information ministries, Bangladesh Press Council and Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha have been made respondents to the writ.

Barrister Mahfuzur Rahman said pictures of rape victim women and children are often being published in media despite prohibition that demeans their families socially.

"Recently, most of the media published the picture of an English mediam school student who died after falling victim to rape. The incident made us sorry. Being aggrieved, I filed the writ" he added.
