Man killed in Barishal over municipal election

A man has been killed allegedly by the supporters of rival councilor candidate ahead of Barishal’s Mehendiganj municipality election to be held on January 30.

Deceased Afsar Uddin Sikder, 55, was a resident of Badarpur area under Mehendigonj upazila in the district.

Deceased’s son alleged that councilor candidate Saki Kawsar alisa Nippon Talukder and his supporters beat Afsar in front of RC College on Sunday afternoon, leaving him critically injured.

The injured was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).

Afsar succumbed to his injuries around 8:30am on Monday at the hospital.

Meanwhile, quoting locals, Mehendigonj Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Abul Kalam said Afsar was injured after being hit by a three-wheeler.

Ward 8 No. Councilor candidate Nurul Haque Jomadder said Nippon Talukder's men hit the Afsar with a stick.

Afsar was his election agent. He is the vice-president of Ward No. 8 Awami League.
