Ayesha Khanam, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and a freedom fighter, passed away at a hospital in the capital early hours of Saturday. She was 74.
She had been suffering from cancer for a long time. She was admitted to BRB Hospital early today after fell sick at home, the organisation's general secretary Maleka Banu confirmed.
Ayesha Khanam's body was taken to the central office of the Mahila Parishad around 8:30 am for people to pay their last respects.
She will be buried at her family graveyard in Netrakona district after Ase prayers.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock at the death of the valiant freedom fighter.
In a message of condolence, the President said, “Ayesha Khanam was a brave fighter in the country’s women rights movement.”
Recalling her contribution to women empowerment with due respect, Abdul Hamid said Ayesha Khanam’s contribution to establishing women’s rights will be remembered for long.
In another condolence, the Premier said the country’s women community has lost a genuine and brave compatriot at the death of the women leader.
She prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Ayesha was born at village Gabragati in Netrokona on October 18, 1947.
A former vice president of Chhatra Union, Ayesha played a prominent role as an organiser of some of the country's most significant historical events, including the student movement of 1962, the mass uprising of 1969 and the Liberation War of 1971.
