![]() Independent candidate Mahmudul wins Phulbari mayoral post Independent candidate Mahmudul Alam Liton has won Dinajpur's Phulbari municipality mayor's post. The election was held on Monday through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) introduced in the district for the first time. The vote casting began at 9:00am at 94 EVM booths under 10 centres and continued till 5:00pm without any break. The total number of voters in the municipality are 27,931. Of them 21,340 cast their votes. Four candidates contested for the mayoral seat while 29 candidates for the seats of councilors of nine wards and 10 for reserved seats of female councilors. Mahmudul won the mayoral seat getting 7,750 votes while independent and incumbent mayor Mortoza Sarker Manik got 7,040, Awami League-backed candidate Khaja Moin Uddin bagged 3,460 and BNP-nominated candidate 3,042 votes respectively. Election at 24 municipalities under the first phase were held on Monday. A total of 93 candidates vied for mayoral posts at 24 municipalities, while 277 candidates for reserved seats of councilors and 848 for general councilors are contesting the election. Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolon Bangladesh and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party candidates contested in the mayoral posts under the first phase of the election.
