Muggers chop off female NGO worker's hand, rob Tk 1.70 lakh

Muggers chopped off left hand of a female NGO worker in a broad daylight in Narsingdi district town on Tuesday.

Critically injured Shanta Akhter,31, a loan officer of ASA, was sent to The National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka. Shanta is the wife of Nadib Mia.

Quoting family, police said two muggers intercepted Shanta in Paschim Kandapara area around 1pm while returning to a branch of the NGO by a rickshaw after collecting loan money from the borrowers.

They tried to snatch away Shanta's vanity bag in which the money was kept.

As Shanta resisted, they choped off her hand, snatched away the bag and fled the scene.

Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the scene and whisked the woman to Narsingdi sadar Hospital.

After giving first aid, doctors referred her to the NITOR, said Sadar Model Police OC Biplob Kumar Dutta.
