Amazon is adding local coverage to its Fire TV news app. As of today, Fire TV users are receiving live and on-demand news from 12 US cities - New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Boston, San Francisco and 12 local city-based local channels. Can access and of course Seattle
Amazon's news app is pre-installed on Fire TV streaming devices and smart TVs sold in the United States. With today’s rollout, you can add two cities to your list of favorites and then you’ll get a mix of coverage from those places. Channels you'll find through the app include BSN Chicago and KIR7 Seattle. You can watch it alongside all the national news network Amazon already offered through the Fire TV News app. Amazon says today's rollout is just the beginning of a promise to make local news more accessible. Throughout 2021, it plans to add support for 90 cities in the United States.
We’ve seen similar initiatives from other technology companies in recent months. Most notably, earlier this year Flipboard added a dedicated local news section. Amazon is probably best suited to support local news outlets, although it faces the same problems as flip boards.
The 12 cities included in today's rollout are some of the most populous metropolitan areas in the United States; Access to local news is not a problem in those places. The people in this community are much smaller than those 12 cities that need support.
Still, this is a handy addition if you want to get the latest news from your city and get access to any Fire TV device.
