Elderly woman killed as bus plunges into ditch

An elderly woman has been killed as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj district.

The accident took place on Bangabandhu Bridge West approach road under the Dhaka-Sirajganj Highway on Saturday morning that also left at least 10 passengers of the bus injured.

Deceased Rabyea Khatun, 70, was a resident of Dhamkail village under Kamarkhanda upazila in the district. 

Quoting locals, Hatikumrul Highway Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam said a Dhaka-bound bus of  'HK Enterprise' turned turtle on the road and fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving the woman  dead on the spot and 10 others injured.

On information, Raiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence members rushed to the scene and rescued the injured with the help of locals.

The wounded were admitted to Sirajganj 250-Bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, the SI added.
