Clearing his party's position over the erection of Bangabandhu's statue, Hefazat-e-Islam joint secretary generaal Maulana Mamunul Haque has said, "We again clearly say that our statement was against the statue not in any way against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"We respect Bangabandhu as the architect of independent Bangladesh and an undisputed great leader and pray for salvation of his departed soul. We neither oppose a late national leader nor even think of doing so," he said at a press conference.
The press conference was held at the central office of Khelafat Majlish on Sunday.
He said country's Alems and Ulemas have protested the erection of statue as it is prohibited in Islam.
"For that reason, I also made my statement protesting it (irection of statues). But a certain quarter is trying to brand the statement as opposition of Bangabandhu," the Khelafat leader said, adding, "Despite our clear political position, a certain quarter is out to make me stand against the government, said Mamunul.
The Hefajat leader denied having any plan of holding anti-state or anti-government programme by his party.
He also demanded immediate release of 23 people who were arrested from a procession in Shantinagar area on November 27.
Khelafat Majlish joint secretary general Maulana Ataullah Amin and Maulana Korban Ali were also present in the press conference.
