Govt carries burden of lakhs of unemployed due to coronavirus

Citing that there are a lot of opportunities for youth to work in fisheries and livestock sector, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim has said several lakhs of Bangladesh expatriates have returned home during the coronavirus pandemic, who are now unemployed. Many also have turned jobless in the country.
Besides, he said ready-made garment industry and flow of remittances have been affected.
"We're now bearing the burden of lakhs of jobless people due to coronavirus. Because of it, we have decided to make each of the unemployed persons self-reliant. They will be assisted in production if they join fisheries and livestock sector. They will be provided loans on easy interest. The person who will receive credit will not remain unemployed," Rezaul said.
The Fisheries and Livestock Minister further said BNP wanted to turn the country into a poorer one, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina intended to make it as a self-reliant one. "The BNP government led by Khaleda Zia wanted that there was no need to make the country self-reliant.
He was speaking as the chief guest while inaugurating a newly-constructed building of the Divisional Livestock Office under the South-Western Livestock Development Project on Friday.
With Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rownak Mahmud in the chair, the function was attended by Khulna divisional commissioner Dr Mohammad Helal Hossain as special guests.
Livestock Department's Director General Dr Abdul Jabbar Sikder delivered address of welcome at the function.
It was also addressed by Director General of the Department of Fisheries Kazi Shams Afroz, Director General of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) Dr Nathu Ram Sarker, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (South) SM Shalikuzzaman, Khulna City Awami League general secretary MDA Babul Rana, among others.
