Gazipur health assistants go on work stoppage
Health assistants of Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur district went on an indefinite work abstention on Thursday demanding a solution to salary discrimination.
The health workers took position in front of the upazila health complex and began the work stoppage this morning, forcing the patients to go back without treatment.
Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), under which vaccinations of 10 types of diseases are being conducted in the health centre, is being hampered due to the movement.
Demand Implementation Committee convenor M Nazmul Hossain Bhuiyan and Kaliganj unit Bangladesh Health Assistant Association (BHAA) president Rafiqul Islam said the movement will continue for an indefinit period until their demand is met.
Kaliganj upazila health and family planning oficial Dr Minhaz Uddin Mia said, "We called upon them to go back to work. We tried to make them understand that movement can be continue despite doing works. But, they did not pay heed to our request".
He said EPI programme is being hampered here, he added.
On November 20, the BHAA announced its work abstention programme at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka demanding a solution to salary discrimination.
The demands include promotion of all health inspectors, assistant health inspectors and health assistants from grade 16 to grades 11, 12 and 13.
