Monir Hossain, who started career as a salesman at a cloth store in capital's Gausia Market in the 1990s, became the owner of assets worth Tk1,050 crore by grabbing lands and smuggling gold.
He was detained by Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday from his Badda residence in Dhaka during a raid for possessing illegal arms and drugs.
Through gold smuggling on Dhaka-Singapore-India route, he amassed wealth of Tk1,050 crore within 30 years, owns a car showroom, over 200 plots and holds shares of a renowned jewelry shop. From then, he is known as 'Golden Monir'.
Lt Col Ashique Billah, director of the RAB's Legal and Media wing, said on secret information they conducted a raid at Monir's six-storey building and recovered eight kilograms of gold ornaments, cash Tk 1 crore, foreign gun, some bullets, foreign currencies of 10 countries worth around Tk 9 lakh.
Monir owns over 200 plots in Badda, Nikunja, Keraniganj and other areas, he added.
