23 days. That’s how long it’s been since The Queen’s Gambit premiered on Netflix, and for almost all of those, it hasn’t just been in the top 10, it’s been at #1.

Every weekend I’ve been checking in to see if it’s held its spot and here we are, yet again, where the rest of the list shuffles around and Queen’s Gambit stays on top. The only time I can remember seeing it slip was a brief moment when Holidate was #1, but that was short-lived.

It has not been long enough for Queen’s Gambit to set any overall top 10 list records (Avatar: The Last Airbender was on the list for something like 60 days), but I believe it may be approaching or have gotten the top prize for the most days a show or movie has been at #1 specifically, though this gets complicated to fully track.

I am a little surprised that Netflix has not released any viewership stats about The Queen’s Gambit yet, as clearly it’s something to brag about, but they may be waiting until the end of the month.

The Witcher is technically the most viewed new series for Netflix of all time, but I don’t believe it was number one for anywhere close to this long. But of course the list is all relative, and without actual viewership numbers attached to each entry, a #1 show from this week could have 50% of the viewers of The Witcher at #4 last year, for all we know.

But I think it’s reasonable to say that The Queen’s Gambit is one of Netflix’s most popular shows ever. As I’ve said many times, it’s a series that is easy to recommend to literally anyone, of any age bracket or interests, and word of mouth has done wonders for it.

There are no plans for a second season of The Queen’s Gambit which is based on a single book and was presented as a Limited Series with a hard ending, another key point in its appeal, I would argue. But when something is popular enough, who knows what might happen, and I am not going to fully rule out that we could see the further adventures of Beth Harmon, even if that’s not such a great idea.

Can The Queen’s Gambit survive another week on top? It is fending off mostly Netflix’s selection of bad Christmas movies, but even new, not-terrible offerings like Dash and Lily, which I believe I saw hit number two, but not number one yet, and it’s already dropping. We’ll check in next week and will see where we’re at.
