9 cases filed over torching buses, bringing procession; 15 detained


Nine cases have been filed over torching buses and bringing out procession in the city on Thursday, on the day of by-elections to Dhaka-18 constituency.

BNP leaders and activists have been made accused in the cases.

Fifteen people have been arrested in the cases.

Of the cases, two each were lodged with Motijheel, Shahbagh and Paltan police stations while one each with Kalabagan, Bhatara and Bongshal police.

BNP executive committee member Ishraque Hossain has also been made in a case filed with Motijheel police.

DMP's Ramna Zone deputy commissioner Sajjadur Rahman told media that two cases were filed with Shahbagh police over torching vehicles while one with Kalabagan filed for bringing out procession without permission to obstruct law enforcers' duty.

Police said most of the accused in the cases are the leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies.

By-election to Dhaka-18 constituency was held on Thursday.

BNP men brought out a procession in Naya Paltan area in the morning bringing allegation of vote rigging.

After some time, a bus, owned by the National Board of Revenue, was set ablaze on the road opposite to the BNP office around 12 noon.

Total 10 buses were torched in different city areas till 8pm on Thursday

Fire Service sources confirmed that fire fighters doused the flame and none injured in the incidents.

Meanwhile, DMP Deputy Commissioner Walid Hossain on Thursday said a quarter caried out the subversive act to foil the election.

"Initially, it seems miscreants torched the buses in a planned way for creating violence. Police are trying to identify the perpetrators through collecting CC camera footage and with the help of eye witnesses and police members," he added.
