Police on Tuesday foiled the France Embassy gherao programme by Islami Andolon Bangladesh protesting the recent comments by President Emmanuel Macron against Islam.
After holding a brief rally at the North gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the morning, the Islamist party brought out a procession towards the French Embassy in Dhaka to lay a siege.
But, as the procession reached Shantinagar intersection, police obstructed it.
In the brief rally, party leaders demanded the government severs diplomatic relations with France.
Their other demands included adopting censure motion in the parliament and removing French Embassy from Bangladesh.
On October 16, an 18-year-old Chechen boy beheaded a French teacher near Paris after he had shown cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed during a class he was leading on free speech.
Later, the French President Macron pledged to fight “Islamist separatism”, which he said, was threatening to take control in some Muslim communities around France.
He also described Islam as a religion “in crisis” worldwide and said the government would present a bill in December to strengthen a 1905 law that officially separated church and state in France, reports Qatar-based Al Jazeera.
His comments, in addition to his backing of satirical outlets publishing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, has led to a social media campaign calling for the boycott of French products from supermarkets in Arab countries and Turkey.
