Malaysia has extended lockdown on its capital Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding state of Selangor for another two weeks till November 9.

Defense Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob made the announcement on Monday.
Same restrictions, which include no contact sports and no inter-district travel, will continue to take place, Ismail said during his daily COVID-19 address to the nation.

Kuala Lumpur, Selangor state, and Putrajaya city were ordered a second lockdown on Oct. 13 that was supposed to end tomorrow.

“Previously the government has imposed a lockdown until October 27, and we have decided to extend it for two more weeks, until Nov. 9,” the minister said in the afternoon, later adding: “The rate of the virus spreading is still high.”

The health ministry reported 1,240 new coronavirus cases on Monday, the highest daily rise on record.

Malaysia’s king on Sunday rejected a proposal by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to declare a state of emergency to fight a new outbreak of the coronavirus.
