A court in Dhaka on Thursday sent Ruhul Amin Gazi, Dainik Sangram chief reporter and president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), to jail a day after he was arrested in a sedition case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Adhikari passed the order after rejecting his bail petition in the case.

Earlier, Ruhul Amin Gazi was produced before the court by Hatirjheel police. Police pleaded to the court to keep Gazi detained in jail.

On the other hand, his lawyers pleaded for granting him bail. After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Adhikari ordered to send him to jail rejecting the plea for his bail.

Police arrested him from the Daily Sangram office in Hatirjheel Wednesday evening.

Earlier on September 22, the same court issued an arrest warrant against him after Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hatirjheel Police Station and also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against him and the daily's editor Abul Asad on September 7.

Freedom-fighter commander Mohammad Afzal filed a case against the duo on December 13 last year under the Digital Security Act.

The case was over a report the Dainik Sangram printed on December 12, 2019, headlined "Today is the sixth martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Abdul Quader Molla."

Quader Molla, former assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was hanged at the old Dhaka Central Jail on December 12, 2013 in a case over committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

Being arrested in the case, Sangram editor Abul Asad is now in jail.
