Trial of DIG Mizan begins for 'acquiring illegal wealth'

The court has framed charges against suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman in a case filed against him for accumulating wealth illegally.
With the framing of charges, the formal trial of the case against him has started.
Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge Court No. 6 on Tuesday framed the charges against former DIG Mizanur Rahman and three others after rejecting a plea of the accused for acquitting them of the case.
At the same time, the court fixed October 27 for recording the testimony of the witnesses in the case.
The charges were read out to the accused in the court and they pleaded not guilty.
Apart from Mizan, other accused on the case are DIG Mizan's wife Sohelia Anar Ratna alias Ratna Rahman, younger brother Mahbubur Rahman and nephew Mahmudul Hasan. Mahmudul Hasan was working as SI in Kotwali Police Station in the capital.
DIG Mizan's wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and younger brother Mahbubur Rahman have been absconding. Arrest warrants were issued against them.
Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Monzur Morshed filed the case on June 24 against DIG Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna, brother Mahbubur Rahman and nephew and police sub-inspector Mahmudul Hasan for concealing information about wealth of Tk 3.7 crore and amassing illegal wealth of Tk 3.28 crore.
On January 30, Monjur submitted the charge sheet against the four accused including DIG Mizan.
Earlier, trial of DIG Mizan began in another bribery case.
