Tourists barred at Nafakhum waterfall

Local administration on Tuesday imposed a ban for tourists on visiting Nafakhum tourist spot in Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban district to avoid accidents.

However, the administration allowed the tourists to visit up to Remakri union in Thanchi if they wanted.

According to sources, the decision was taken following the death of a tourist who washed away while taking bath in Nafakhum waterfall on October 3. Besides, heavy rains, rising water levels in the Sangu River, and the visit of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on October 14 in the upazila are also the reasons for taking such a decision.

Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ariful Islam Mridul said tourists have been discouraged from traveling to Nafakhum temporarily.

“If the situation improves, we will open the spot for tourists again,” he added.

Al least, 11 tourists died and more then 200 injured after falling into the Nafakhum waterfalls in the last seven years.
