Water in the Jamuna River in Sirajganj district has crossed the danger level again due to heavy rainfall for over the last several consecutive days and onrush of hilly water.
Apart from the river, water of Fuljor, Ichhamati, Karatoa, and Hurasagor rivers have also increased. Consequently, the low-lying areas in the district have started being inundated.
AKM Rafiqul Islam, divisional deputy engineer of Water Development Board in Sirajganj, said water level in the Jamuna river was recorded 13.44cm at Sirajganj Hard Point on Friday morning and the water was flowing 9cm above the danger level.
At the same time, the water level in the river was recorded 13.44cm at Kazipur point and it was flowing 18cm above the danger level.
The earlier flood this year damaged corps worth about Tk 225 crore. Inhabitants in the district could not yet overcome the losses of the flood.
Now, the fresh flood has already submerged 3,406 hectares of Aman paddy land in Sirajganj Sadar, Shahzadpur, Chowhali, Kazipur and Belkuchi upazilas while 931 hectares of black gram, 234 hectares of winter vegetables, 80 hectares of nut and 68 hectares of pepper, said sources in the district agricultural department.
