Education Ministry's probe body visits MC College in Sylhet

The three-member committee formed by the Ministry of Eucation to probe the gang-rape at MC College hostel in Sylhet city visited the spot on Tuesday.

The probe body members arrived at MC College at about 5:00pm. Afterward, they held a meeting with the principal and members of the inquiry committee formed by the college. Then the committee members went to the hostel and visited different rooms of a newly-constructed building of the hostel. At that time, they collected various information and data.

Head of the inquiry committee, Shahidul Kabir Chowdhury, who is also the Director (College and Administration) of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, said the committee would submit a priliminary report within three days and a full-fledged report within seven days.

Shahidul Kabir said the committee members would talk to the college authorities and persons concerned. If necessary, they would talk to the victim.

Two other members of the committee are Assistant Director of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Lokman Hossain and Deputy Director Noor-e-Alam.

On September 25 afternoon, a couple from South Surma in Sylhet went to visit MC College campus. Five to six leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) grabbed them on the campus suddenly, took them to their hostel forcibly, and beat them up. Later, he tied the husband and raped the 19-year-old housewife in front of him.

Receiving information, Shah Paran police went to the hostel and rescued the woman. She was admitted to Syhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital at about 10:30pm.

The next day, the victim's husband filed a case against nine people at the city's Shah Paran Police Station, naming six people. All the six accused are - Bangladesh Chhatra League activists. They are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Tarequl Islam Tareque, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum. The victim is currently admitted to the OCC centre of Osmani Hospital in Sylhet.

Meanwhile, another absconding accused of gang-rape of a housewife at Sylhet MC College hostel was arrested on Tuesday.

Tarequl Islam Tareque was arrested from Dirai uipazila in Sunamganj upazila on Tuesday evening. He is the accused number two of the case.

Additional Police Super of RAB-9 Samiul Alam said Tareque went into hiding at the house of his relatve at village Borma in Jogodal union under Dirai upazila. Being confirmed about his presence on the basis of a tip-off, RAB raided the house and arrested him from there.
