Police have arrested Saifur Rahman, the prime accused in a case filed over the gang rape of a woman at MC College in Sylhet on Friday night.
The law enforcers arrested Saifur, an activist of MC College unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), from Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district on Sunday morning, Shahporan Police Station OC Abdul Qayum confirmed.
Earlier, the victim's husband lodged a case with the police station at early hours of Saturday against nine persons mentioning the
name of six BCL men.
On September 25, a young woman was gang raped allegedly by several BCL activists at MC College on Friday night while visiting there with her husband.
They forcibly took the couple to the college hostel at Tilagarh area at about 8:30pm, tying the husband and raped the wife, said the police station OC Abdul Qayyum citing the case statement.
On information, police rescued the duo and sent the woman to the One-stop Crisis Centre at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 10:00pm.
A three-member probe committee has been formed
with Prof Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, a teacher of the Department of
Mathematics of the MC College, as convener to probe the incident.
Besides, two guards--Darwan Rasel
Mia and Chowkidar Sabuj Ahmed Ruhan--of the hostel have been suspended for "negligence in
duty."
