Awami League nominated candidate Alhaj Md Nuruzzaman Biswas has unofficially been elected in the by-election of the Pabna-4 constituency (Ishwardi-Atgharia) of parliament with a huge margin receiving 2,39,924 votes.
His nearest rival BNP backed candidate Habibur Rahman Habib bagged 5,576 votes contesting with the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, while Rezaul Karim of Jatiya Party got 3,074 votes.
Pabna district election official and Returning Officer Md Abdul Latif Sheikh announced the by-election result after counting of ballots at 129 polling centres in Ishwardi and Atgharia upazilas.
The number of voters in the Pabna-4 constituency are 3,81,112.
There are 84 polling centres in Ishwardi upazila, where the number of voters are 2,54,097. Of them, 1,28,176 are male voters, while 1,25,921 are female voters.
On the other hand, there are 45 polling centres at Atgharia upazila where the number of voters is 1,27,015. Of them, 63,536 are male and 63,479 are female voters.
Voting in the by-election started at 9:00am and continued till 5:00pm without any break.
Pabna district election official and Returning Officer Md Abdul Latif Sheikh said, "No untoward incident took place at anywhere in the constituency. The voting was held peacefully."
Expressing his instant reaction to win the by-polls, Nuruzzaman Biswas said, "I'm grateful to all the people irrespective of classes and professions in my electoral area. I intend to build up a beautiful Ishwardi-Atgharia receiving cooperation from all quarters and work relentlessly for making the development programmes led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a success.
Meanwhile, BNP candidate Habibur Rahman Habib boycotted the by-election citing various irregularities early Saturday afternoon. He also demanded fresh by-polls in the constituency.
The Pabna-4 constituency was declared vacant on April 2 following the death of Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu. Though the by-polls were supposed to be held within 90 days, it couldn't be possible to hold the by-polls due to coronavirus pandemic.
