Pabna-4 by-election today

By-election in Pabna-4 constituency (Ishwardi-Atgharia) of the Jatiya Sangsad will be held on Saturday. The vote casting will start ay 9:00am and continue till 5:00pm without any break.

The candidates ended their all kinds of election campaigns on Thursday midnight for holding the by-polls.

Awami League has held the seat for 25 consecutive years, whereas BNP candidate hopes to regain the seat.

The Election Commission has completed all preparations for the by-election. This time the ballot papers will be sent to the polling booths in the morning of the polling day. Pabna-4 seat is geographically and economically important owing to the Ishwardi railway junction, EPZ as well as the country's most expensive under construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Project.

The total number of voters in Pabna-4 constituency comprises of two upazilas--Ishwardi and Atgharia. There are two municipalities and 12 unions. The total number of voters in the constituency are 3,81,112. Of them, 1,91,697 are male voters while the rest 1,89,415 are female voters.

Former Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu, from Pabna-4 constituency, died on April 2 and the Election Commission declared the seat vacant. Eighteen Awami League nomination seekers tried to secure nomination for the seat. Finally, the party nominated Pabna District Awami League vice-president and former Ishwardi Upazila chairman Nuruzzaman Biswas.

Habibur Rahman Habib, advisor to the BNP chairperson, and Pabna District BNP convener, and Rezaul Karim Khokon of Jatiya Party, have been nominated by their respective parties.

Veteran Awami League leader Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu was elected from this seat five times in a row. After he became land minister, his family members got involved in terrorism, land grabbing and tender snatching in the local areas.





However, the Awami League candidate is 100 per cent optimistic about winning the  by-election. Local Awami League leaders and workers said no party would take the responsibility of corruption of any individual or family. Voters will elect the candidate with 'Boat' symbol.
