Several thousand tons of onion coming from Turkey at Tk 12 per kg

Several thousands metric tonnes of onion are being imported from Turkey to Bangladesh at 1 Turkish lira or Tk 12 per kg in the wake of crisis in the local market.Importers said it would be possible to make the onion available at Tk 40 per kg after the arrival of those imported onions.
It is learnt that some 57,500 metric tonnes of onion are being imported from China, Turkey, Egypt and Myanmar through the Chattogram seaport.

On the other hand, prices of Indian variety of onion go up by Tk 25-30 per kg at Khatunganj Wholesale Market after India imposed ban on onion export.
Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Mohammad Hasanuzzaman said onion prices did not increase due to the ban imposed by India, rather it was increased due to the syndication of 50 port-centred importers.
Some 1,082 metric tonnes of onion were imported through the Chittagong Seaport during the last three months.
"Some 57,500 metric tonnes of imported onion are coming from China, Turkey and Egypt through the Chittagong Seaport over the next one week," said Dr Mohammad Asaduzzaman Bulbul, deputy director of the Chittagong Seaport .
