The government has decided to import onion from a number of countries to ensure adequate supply of essential cooking item in the country's market.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said steps have already been taken to import onion from Turkey and Egypt in light of the government decision.
It is expected that the consignments of the imported onion are likely to arrive at Chattogram Port by the first week of next month, the Foreign Ministry said.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam has said that Bangladesh is expecting positive responses from the onion exporting countries soon.
The state minister also said the issue of banning onion export by India was raised with the country's Ministry of External Affairs through the Bangladesh High Commissioner.
Shahriar Alam said there is "an unwritten consensus" that India would apprise Bangladesh before taking such a decision to ban export of onion.
The neighbouring India banned export of onion on Monday.
